(from reading S. Doug Dorst J J Abrams)
Start with one researcher (2000s?) becoming obsessed with a 1920s municipal researcher and connecting it to the 70s stuff. 1920s researcher is going through the 1890s collection of badly documented archeological stuff that they kept out of institutions and thus was poorly cared for.
We watch 2000s researcher over 20 years, coming back again and again and to pick at this scab, collecting evidence of how 1920s was lost, until we see 1920s surface in the archive to 2000s. Then 2000s and 1920s start talking to you.
Meanwhile they had both been researching and arguing about 1890s stuff, and all the evidence of this incursion. Dramatic irony that they don't see it eating them also. 2000s now also has 1970s access. 1970s acquires some of 1920s archive but 1970s doesn't form the same relationships, just collects extra stuff.
This is already too complicated. I need to shrink it down. None of these people are people yet, they're just time periods.
